Diagnostic and laser surgery department

Modern diagnostic and laser treatment department is the newest department of our Center.

The Head of the department is Dr. Yelena A. Malayan

The department is equipped with the latest diagnostic equipment: computer perimeter (Tomey AP-1000), diode laser, laser topography, autorefractometer (Tomey RC-5000), YAG laser, OCT, Allegro Oculyzer, ultrasonic biometry (Tomey AL-100), Laser Systems Allegretto and Femtolaser (Alcon) etc.

Since 2006 owing to the introduction of modern laser technologies PRK, LASIK laser surgeries are first time in Armenia have been conducted in our Department. These surgeries are performed with the help of American most recent system “Alcon” and an instrument called microkeratome which provides patients with new “LASIK” technology. Both nearsighted, farsighted and people with astigmatism can benefit from the LASIK procedure which first time in Armenia were conducted in our Center. This procedure has several advantages over the PRK including a relative lack of pain afterward, achievement of good vision and ability to go to work the next day. It is very precise and results are very accurate. Since 2006 over 4 800 laser vision correction procedures have been performed under the management and participation of Dr Yelena A. Malayan, the head of the department.

Starting from March 2014, a Femtosecond laser FS200 for LASIK procedure is used in our Department. Femto LASIK is the newest technology which can be used to correct 90 % of all refractive errors. The modern, bladeless Femtosecond laser technology offers an alternative to the microkeratome in creating the corneal flap during the first step of the LASIK procedure. The precision of the Femtosecond laser provides the patient with a greater assurance of safety and excellent results. Our patients can choose from three (PRK, LASIK , FemtoLASIK) different laser ablation techniques.

Starting from 2009 cross-linking technique is used in our Center for keratoconus treatment.

More than 800 patients were treated by this technique and results are more than we were expecting. In many cases became possible not only stop the progress of disease but also improve the eyesight.

Cross-linking is a medical procedure that combines the use of ultra-violet light and riboflavin eye drops. It can help to enhance the rigidity of corneal tissue, stabilizing the condition and prevent the need for a corneal transplant.

Starting from 2014 new treatment, Intracorneal ring segments for keratokonus (ICRS) are also used in our Department. Intracorneal ring segments may be indicated for patients with low myopia, keratoconus, and post-LASIK keratectasia 5,7. The indications for implantation of ICRS are clear central cornea and contact lens intolerance. The purpose of ICRS implantation of patients with keratoconus is to defer the need for corneal transplantation and restore contact lens tolerance.

Intracorneal ring segment indications include:

  • Progressive keratoconus;
  • Contact lens intolerance;
  • Corneal ectasia postexcimer laser;
  • Corneal irregularities postradial keratotomy;
  • Corneal irregularities post-PK;
  • Pellucid marginal degeneration;
  • Corneal irregularities post-trauma;
  • Myopia/astigmatism in thin corneas.

Other surgeries are conducted in our department: cataract surgery, Minimal invasive cataract surgery- (phacoemulsification),, laser treatment of secondary cataract and retina’s disorders, keratplasty.
